Frequently Asked Questions

Is WisePen considered Assistive Technology under NDIS?

WisePen may be considered low-cost Assistive Technology (AT) where it supports a participant’s disability-related needs and NDIS goals, such as reading, literacy, communication or daily living. Assistive Technology generally refers to devices or tools that help a person do things more independently, safely or effectively.

If you would like to better understand what Assistive Technology includes — and how to determine whether a reader pen qualifies as low-cost AT — we have a detailed blog article that explains what AT is, how funding categories work, and how WisePen may fit within those guidelines here: How to Choose a Reader Pen as Low-Cost Assistive Technology

You can also refer to the official NDIS Assistive Technology guidance for further information.

What funding category does WisePen fall under?

Depending on the participant’s individual plan, goals and disability-related needs, WisePen may be considered under funding categories such as:

  • Assistive Technology (Low-Cost AT)
  • Capacity Building Supports
  • Core Supports, where appropriate to the participant’s plan

In simple terms, Core Supports generally relate to everyday needs and daily living, while Capacity Building Supports are designed to help build longer-term skills, independence and confidence. Low-cost Assistive Technology usually includes practical tools that support function, communication, learning or participation.

Funding depends on how the device relates to the participant’s personal NDIS goals and whether it is considered reasonable and necessary.

For more detailed information about NDIS funding categories, Assistive Technology, and plan budgets, we recommend visiting the official NDIS website or speaking with your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager.

What does “reasonable and necessary” mean?

For an item to be funded, it must meet the NDIS “reasonable and necessary” criteria. This generally means it must:

• Support your disability-related needs
• Help you pursue your goals
• Be value for money
• Be considered effective and beneficial

Do I need an Occupational Therapist (OT) report?

For low-cost Assistive Technology, an OT report is not always required. However, some participants may choose to provide supporting documentation, particularly if the device supports specific therapy or educational goals. We recommend confirming with your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager.

Can self-managed participants purchase directly?

Yes. If you are self-managed, you can request a quote, purchase the WisePen directly, and then claim through the NDIS portal according to your plan guidelines.

How does it work for plan-managed participants?

If you are plan-managed, we can issue an invoice to your Plan Manager once approval is confirmed. The Plan Manager processes payment on your behalf.

What if I am NDIA-managed (agency-managed)?

If you are agency-managed, approval may be required before purchase. Please speak with your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator first. Our team can provide documentation to assist with your submission.

Can WisePen support adults as well as children?

Yes. WisePen is suitable for children, teenagers, and adults who need support with reading, literacy, communication, or language translation.

Is WisePen suitable for dyslexia, ADHD, or autism?

WisePen may be useful for some people who experience reading difficulties, processing challenges or attention-related barriers. Features such as text-to-speech, dictionary lookup and AI reading support tools may help with reading access, comprehension and understanding written information.

Suitability will depend on the individual user’s needs, preferences and support goals. WisePen is not intended to diagnose, treat or cure any condition, but it may be a helpful support tool for some individuals.

Can I get a quote and product information for WisePen?

Yes. We can provide a formal quote and product information to support your discussion with your Plan Manager, Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator or other relevant support person.

Providing a quote does not guarantee funding approval, but it may help you explain how the product relates to your needs, goals and support arrangements.

How long does NDIS funding consideration usually take for products like WisePen?

Timeframes can vary depending on the participant’s plan, funding type, supporting documentation and who is involved in the decision-making process. Because each situation is different, there is no fixed timeframe.

We recommend speaking with your Plan Manager, Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator or relevant NDIS contact for guidance on what may apply in your circumstances.
